Why Waiting to Plan Your Recruiting Journey is the Biggest Mistake You Can Make

Max Garro, Recruited to Play™
If you think I’d be shocked that most 7th, 8th, and 9th graders don’t have a plan for getting recruited, let me be real - I’m not! As a player and a coach, I see it all the time: super talented athletes, great families, tons of potential… but no roadmap. The truth is, it’s not the exception. It’s the norm.

But here’s what might surprise you: less than 1% of athletes get recruited without a plan. That means if your dream is to play college sports (and let’s face it, whose isn’t?), just winging it is not going to cut it.

Parents, this part’s for you:

It’s easy to get caught up in club schedules, weekend tournaments, and hoping that the right coach happens to notice your athlete. But coaches at the next level are looking for so much more than just stats. They want athletes who lead, lift up teammates, hustle every play, and never let their energy dip, even on the tough days.

They’re scouting for players who can step into a group and make it better. They notice the kid who’s both a great teammate and a high-impact performer. They remember the athlete who brings the extra spark, who communicates with purpose, inspires everyone around them, and gives undeniable effort, day in and day out.

Your energy, your effort, and your example matter more than you know.

But here’s the thing: without a strategy, your athlete might never get the chance to show those qualities. Coaches can’t recruit what they don’t see, and if you don’t have a plan for getting on their radar, you’re just hoping for a lucky break.

Don’t Leave It to Chance

If you’re serious about helping your child reach their college sports dreams, it’s time to get intentional. The earlier you start, the more prepared and confident your athlete will be when the big recruiting moments arrive.

That’s why we built Recruited to Play™ to give families a proven roadmap so your child doesn’t miss out just because nobody told you what really matters. From building a target list to writing coach emails, making highlight reels, and understanding what actually grabs a coach’s attention, we cover it all.

So don’t wait. Take the guesswork out of recruiting and give your athlete the edge they need, because every dream deserves a plan.
